Worn carbon brushes cause commutator damage. Carbon brushes are worn down by use. If the brush becomes too short there is a risk of electrical wear to the contact surface, primarily caused by arcing and sparking. This results in serious damage to the commutator and the motor. It is important to replace worn brushes before damage occurs.
When the brush reaches a predetermined wear level, the Helwig Commutator Protector (HCP™) Sensor wire is exposed, forming an electrical circuit, and sending a signal to your warning device.
